Some design flawsSep 06, 2011
By Mindy This toy is ALMOST great, but unfortunately the designers didn't test it very well, if at all.
The pros: - The barn is one of the best parts, with several doors that open and close.
- The vehicle has two modes, one for driving or one for operating the equipment. It's fun and easy to push the toggle on/off button to make it drive autonomously, and then push it again to stop it. There is a separate switch on the back for changing the modes between driving the vehicle and operating the equipment.
- You can manually turn a dial and operate the crane and conveyor belt, which is a nice alternative.
The cons: - The packaging (we purchased this at a store) clearly shows multiple green barrels of hay for loading, and my son was very excited about having several barrels. Perhaps to save 5 cents, the company decided to only include one barrel of green rectangular hay, which is not nearly as fun as even two would have been.
- The conveyor belt SOMETIMES manages to get the square hay up to the rafters, as shown in the picture and as expected. Typically this doesn't work because the incline is too steep and the conveyor belt is approximately an inch short in height. Most of the time you need to manually assist the hay, which defeats the purpose of the automatic conveyor belt and my child finds very frustrating.
- The crane lifter just goes up and down automatically, but you need to manually remove the hay from the grabber arm. My son hasn't played with it at all so far, which I find odd b/c he generally loves all things crane related. Hopefully this will change.
Summary: I think my 4 yr old will get a lot of play with just the vehicle and barn, and maybe that is worth the thirty bucks it's currently selling for. Although if I just wanted a barn I would have bought a nicer, probably wooden one for the same price.
All in all it's a decent toy, but doesn't seem to have the longevity of a great toy and will probably be passed on or break and end up in a landfill in about a year.
