5Wonderful "toy baby" for my one-year-old sonJan 07, 2011
By Amy
We purchased this as a first birthday gift for my one-year-old son. We're extremely pleased. This is a high-quality toy, and my son is fascinated by this new "toy baby."

The doll's exterior is a soft, velour-type material. There's something like beanbag filling in the feet and through parts of the torso, giving the toy a nice weight and a more realistic look when sat up against something. The pacifier is awesome. It has no "nipple" -- the doll's mouth is a stitched-on, closed-mouth smile, and the pacifier is just an oval that sits on top of it with the help of a magnet -- but my son doesn't care AT ALL. He finds the pacifier hilarious, as well as the fact that it can hide the baby's smile. (I may give Sam my son's old pacifier chain, though, because I think it could get lost easily.) The doll has stitched individual fingers and toes, which my son has already found extremely interesting, plus a belly button and a bum.

Finally, while this is a matter of personal preference, I think the clothes are AWESOME. I find the outfit to be plenty boyish, with a green dinosaur on both the outfit and the pacifier, which I prefer to the pale blue outfits of other "boy" baby dolls. These clothes look like something my son would actually wear, and they really help this toy look as non-girly as possible. I think it's a great touch that the little romper velcroes open and shut between the legs, as well as at the back -- real baby clothes allow for diaper changes, and while my son hasn't gotten that far with his "baby care," I love that this is possible. I have no reason to doubt the durability of this toy, though I haven't yet washed it. I will update this review if anything goes wrong.

I'm sure that little babies' reactions to dolls would vary widely, but one reason I like Sam so much is that my son has taken to him so well. He was more drawn to this than many of his other birthday gifts. I gave him Sam to play with for a car ride, and my son cackled at -- and chewed on -- Baby Sam for a good 25 minutes. My son is always delighted to see Sam. He finds the pacifier hilarious. I have no idea whether this will bring out nurturing qualities in my son, or whether he'll enjoy imitating baby care with this doll. So far, he just finds Sam to be extremely entertaining.

I spent a lot of time looking for a good "toy baby" for my son. I also considered a Corolle Mon Premier Calin Charming Pastel - 12" Doll (there is one available dressed in light blue clothes), as well as an inexpensive baby sold in-store at Toys 'R' Us. Of these options, I think Sam has the best clothes -- the Calin clothes are OK, but the best I could have done at TRU was violet -- though of course this is just personal preference. I was leaning toward a vinyl-limbed baby doll, because I thought that would be more of a unique experience for my son -- I wasn't sure that he would see much difference between this baby and some of his velour stuffed animals. As it turns out, I am extremely pleased with my choice. My son definitely gets that this is a toy baby, and at this age, he's still so rough with his stuff that I'm glad I went with Sam. I'd hate to see a vinyl baby with bite marks, for example. :o) (Though maybe this isn't a problem. I don't own any dolls from Corolle or TRU, so I wouldn't know.)

I'm just so pleased with Baby Sam already that I felt moved to post immediately. It is just a perfect toy for my son, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a baby for a very young child or for an older sibling.

UPDATE, 10 MONTHS LATER: My son is now 22 months old and "Baby" is one of his favorite toys. It's a useful toy to have around, for the sake of imitation. We brought Sam along with us when visiting a new baby, and my son was happy to hold his own baby the entire time. If my son protests a diaper change, sometimes we'll change Baby's diaper first. Etc. etc. etc. My favorite Baby moments are when I catch a quick glimpse of my son hugging Baby and patting his back, as we do with my son. So, so sweet. So far, Sam is standing up well to MANY clothing changes, food stains (wipes right off with a baby wipe when we catch it fast), and plenty of toddler love from several little ones. When we bought Sam, it felt extravagant to spend twenty-two dollars on a baby doll for a one-year-old boy. But this is absolutely one of the best toys we have. I'm also glad we went with Sam rather than a vinyl doll, since Sam is so snuggly. I highly recommend this toy.

5Finally, a boy baby doll!Sep 28, 2010

My daughter has Baby Stella but my son wanted a doll too. He loved Stella's magnetic pacifier and I love that she is plush and not plastic. Baby Sam was the clear answer...although I think he may be discontinued..shame on you Manhattan Toy! A wise woman responded to criticism regarding boys playing with dolls by saying that playing with dolls was training for being a father. I couldn't agree more and my son loves Sam!

4Great doll for son, or for a big sister with baby brother on the way.Feb 21, 2011
By Sarah Eddy
Our son is always stealing his sister's dolls so we decided to get him a doll of his own. Amazon has a great price, less than 2/3 of the price of buying it locally. This doll is very well made and the body has a nice squishy feel to it when hugged. I like that there is a little diaper that can be put on and removed with velcro under the clothing, so cute! Our son also uses a pacifier at night, so he likes that the doll has one as well and he points that out every night now that he is starting to use words. I do wish that Manhattan toys would make more boy baby doll clothing and accessories. Everything else they make to purchase is for girl baby dolls. One thing I do not like about the doll is that the velour type material they use for the hair and clothing edging is like a super lint attractor and I am always having to clean it off so it doesn't look dirty.
